Teacher Keesha Talks About Planning the Avocado Exploration

Keesha: The reason we're doing the avocado project today is because we've been talking with the children about where things come from. Where does a plant come from? How does a seed grow? Where does food come from? And so, we've planted some things. We've planted flowers; we've planted tomatoes, potatoes; and so today we're going to be exploring avocados. They're all different consistencies in ripeness, so we're going to talk about how they feel on the outside. They're going to explore in their own way as to how to get to the inside, and we're going to make discoveries as to what's in there. We'll do some predictions before we get started and talk about what they think they'll find.

Let's talk about your avocado. Eileen is rolling her avocado. What can you do with your avocado? Hmm? What does it taste like? Oh, you threw it like a ball? It is round like a ball, huh?

Mia: Yeah!

Keesha: As they discover the insides of the avocado and talk about the outsides of the avocado, then we'll also compare that, because we've been doing avocados and doing different foods and fruits and vegetables and where they come from. Last time, we did bananas, so we'll do a little compare and contrast with how the bananas feel, what color they are. They'll make discoveries today with the avocados but also connect it to something that they've tried before. We'll always connect it to home and their experiences, and so, because they're young, sensory learners, they're going to be experiencing this will all their senses today. They're going to smell it, they're going to touch it, they're going to taste it, and just talk about their exploration.

Andrew: Banana.

Keesha: Banana, yes.
