Graduated Guidance with Play by Play
Teacher: Go. Very nice job. Keep going. Nice work. Perfect, you’ve got it.
Child: [Inaudible]
Teacher: Yes.
This clip shows an educator using a physical prompting strategy called graduated guidance to help a child learn to pedal a tricycle. The educator begins by giving the least amount of assistance necessary, placing her hands right over the child’s feet, but not quite touching him. As the child continues to pedal, the educator gradually increases or decreases the level of support as the child needs it. The long-term goal is for the child to pedal a tricycle with no support at all.
