It’s All About You Telescope
[music]
Kristin: Hello, everyone. It's time for our "All About You" segment, and we are here with Gail Joseph. Gail, hi.
Gail Joseph: Hi.
Kristin: What do you have for us today?
Gail: OK, well, I like to always bring a little something that can help us all feel a little bit more centered, really, to build our own resiliency and wellness. It's really, really, really hard to teach young children if we're not feeling well ourselves, if we're feeling a little stressed, if we're feeling a little down. So, this is the part where we just talk about some little tips that we can use, things to think about to help us feel a little bit better each day. So, today I brought you telescopes.
Kristin and Dawn: Ooooh.
Gail: So, I know that in our segment we were talking about emotions, right? And so, one of the things that can happen to us is sometimes we can get our telescope kind of stuck. And we can start just focusing on the negative of a situation, the negative feelings that we're having about a situation. We can just get stuck and all we can think about is how terrible it's going to be, how awful it's going to be, about this one bad thing, even though there might be many other things happening that are more positive.
So, this tip is to always make sure to move your telescope, right, to move it around and think, "What is maybe possibly positive about this situation?" Right? So, maybe you had planned this really amazing field trip, but it gets rained out and you're not going to go, and all you can think about is, "I spent all that time planning, and we're not gonna be able to go, and I don't have anything planned for the kids." Right? And you can get just stuck and perseverate on that negative piece. So, you need to think to yourself, "Hm, I've got to move my telescope, right, I've got to see what else is around here. Wow, I have this great opportunity with all these parent volunteers to get them in my classroom, and we're going to do extra-long free choice. And now that we have extra long, I can do that extra-long art activity I was thinking about doing that I never seem to have time for." So, really being able to just move your telescope and think, "Yeah, there's still something negative, but there's some other things that are positive that I can see." So, it's just something to always remember, "Hey, am I stuck? Do I need to move my telescope?"
Kristin: Move my telescope. Dawn: Move my telescope.
Kristin: I love that. I love that! Thank you, Gail.
Gail: You're welcome.
In this “It’s All About You” segment, Gail brings telescopes to talk about how to get unstuck from negative feelings. This video is part of the Positive Behavior Support module, one of several EarlyEdU Alliance Higher Education Learning Modules.
