Program Planning

Thoughtful planning is critical to programming. Explore these resources for guidance through the five-year grant. Learn how to establish continuous cycles of improvement that involve key stakeholders in data-based decision-making.

Organizational Leadership

Leadership and governance are the bedrocks of effective management. Head Start program leadership consists of three key entities: the governing body/Tribal Council (i.e., legal and fiscal responsibilities); Policy Council/parent committees (i.e., set program direction); and management staff (i.e., day-to-day operations).

Grant Application

Use this tool when working through the process of applying for a grant from the Office of Head Start. Find tips, standards, and a locator map that shows you the available funding around the country.

Mental Health

Head Start programs support the mental health of children, families, and staff every day. Early childhood mental health is the same as social and emotional well-being.

Health Services Management

New and experienced staff will find professional development tools to help keep children safe, healthy, and ready to learn.

Human Resources

Head Start programs are only as good as their people. Explore resources on this topic to make sure staff members and volunteers have the credentials and competencies needed to provide quality Head Start services.

ERSEA

Eligibility, recruitment, selection, enrollment, and attendance (ERSEA) tasks are some of the most important work performed by Head Start programs.

Culture and Language

Head Start programs are committed to recognizing and respecting the culture and language of the children and their families. Programs emphasize the strengths of each children’s individual culture and language and holding high expectations for all.

Family Support and Well-being

Family well-being means all family members are safe, healthy, and have chances for educational advancement and economic mobility. When families face challenges, their health and wellness can be negatively impacted.

Teaching Practices

Effective, nurturing, and responsive teaching practices and interactions are key for all learning in early childhood settings. They foster trust and emotional security, offer rich communication and language learning, and promote critical thinking and problem-solving.
