Zoning: One-on-One Zoning
Teacher: [Gasps] Did you cook it? Hot! Hot. What do we do when something's too hot?
Child: Blow on it.
Teacher: Blow on it? Oh, you want to put it in the fridge? You can put it in the fridge. That's a really good idea. Good scooping. Say, "Good job, Joy! Good job, Joy." Danton. Danton. He's curious. All done! Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum!
Child: Hot.
Teacher: Hot. Hot. You got to be careful. Hot! Tss!
Child: [Laughs] That's not hot.
Teacher: I know. That's not hot. You're filling your cup. Look. Oh, you're dumping it. Good job. Good job. Here. Whoa.
Child: Here you go.
Teacher: [Gasps] Did you cook it? Hot!
Child: Here you go.
Teacher: [Gasps] Did you cook it?
One-on-one zoning is where one adult is responsible for the supervision of one child throughout an activity, routine, or day. Watch as the educator at the table engages in one-to-one zoning. How does this maximize the child’s learning? Notice the educator in the back of the room. When the children move from the carpet area to the dramatic play area, the educator moves with them. When there are no children in an educator’s assigned zone, it is important to move with them.
