#GetaHeadStart: Angel Taveras
[Music]
Angel Taveras: I grew up in Providence, Rhode Island. One of very few Latinos at that time. We're talking about 1974, '75 and was very fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of Head Start. It was really for me a great opportunity to learn to get started and made me feel very proud to be able to go to school. I knew my letters, knew my numbers. There is no doubt that being in Head Start really gave me an opportunity to prepare myself for my K through 12 education.
I went to Harvard. I was also an Echoing Green Public Service Fellow between college and law school. And I worked on an after school and summer program for kids in Providence, and that was something that was important to me. Practiced law for, gosh, for 14 years before I became Mayor of the city of Providence. I was elected in 2010. My campaign slogan was 'from Head Start to Harvard,' which is the path that I've travelled.
To be the first Latino Mayor of the city was a great honor. I never dreamt when I was growing up in Providence that I'd be Mayor. Head Start was very key because it started my eagerness to learn and my love for school and for academics. And that was key for everything that's happened since then and prepared me for success.
