Head Start Heals: Rebuilding Hope
[Music]
Rubén: [In Spanish] The town of San Sebastián is located in western Puerto Rico. It’s a town with a population of about 35,000 to 40,000 people. We currently have 104 families and we serve 104.

All of Puerto Rico was completely calm, especially our town. After all this happened, and we could go outside, we saw massive destruction. It was total destruction. I thought about how we could reach out to the families. It was very hard to do. Very hard.
Lizmarie: So we prepared equal packages boxes of water, there were also basic-need items and food, like rice and beans. And then our staff distributed the supplies to each home in the community.
Rubén: And we opened up the center for the children. We had lights, electrical service, thanks to the electric generator. Families could charge their cellphones. My center has a washing machine, dryer, fridges we had our kitchen open to store things. So we could bring peace of mind to those families, at least for a little while.
Lizmarie: So they understood the program isn’t just about education, it also promotes family well-being.
