Using Video in Coaching

Julie Gretchen: There are several ways to use videos in coaching. Sometimes the teacher can video themselves or have someone, a third person, come in and use some video, and then reflect on the video and then have a conversation with the coach back and forth. Other times, I can do the video and then kind of bring things up to the teachers to look at or kind of edit it down to see some more targeted things to have a reflective conversation. There's also some online platforms that you can use to use a tool for back and forth conversations about the video coaching.

Becka Androes: To be able to video a circle time or a small group and then just sit back and just to watch it and to have a discussion. And so my mentor and I did have a lot of discussions around videos or taping. And that was a really powerful piece for me, because then I could see, oh, here are all the things that we did right, and this is something - this is an area we can work on, and how can I do that?

Debbie Roberts: Using the provider's own video clips is so powerful. And there's going to be so much more investment in it, and that's great.

Debra Walter: Seeing yourself for the first time and just what you're seeing, It's one thing to be told that you're doing something well, or that maybe you have some areas to work on, but to see yourself, to me it's as powerful to see what I am doing well than what I'm not. It's like, "Wow, I've got that?" So I think it could really - it's powerful in building a confidence. And you know, if you feel good about what you're doing, you're more ready to embrace the challenges.

And then we were talking about using it as a way to share some of our own practices with our group, our teaching practices, and get feedback on that - not just from the coaches, but from the other providers and the other teachers, so that we're actually almost creating that community of practice in our teaching.
