Responsive Design

"Responsive design" refers to a website's ability to resize content from a large to a small screen in one fluid motion. Resize this page by dragging your browser window smaller and larger. As you do this, watch how the menus restructure and the images, header, and footer adjust accordingly.

This technique is called "responsive" because the site's code is responding to the user's viewport, or screen size. It recalculates how to present content and optimizes it so the user has the best presentation of the data available. This allows for better usability of HeadStart.gov across devices. For example, most images would be hidden on a mobile device, like a smartphone or tablet, to allow a faster load time.

HeadStart.gov's responsive techniques are optimized for all screen sizes across the board, not a standard set of three or four sizes. Go to any page, scale the window to any size, and the site will accommodate the request. This was done to meet the needs of all current tablet and mobile users, including future mobile devices that come to market.
