Children’s Possible Reactions to a Disaster

It is normal for children to react to stress right after an emergency.

Infants and toddlers may:

  • Start to show the same emotions as their caregivers, or they may act differently, like crying for no reason, staying away from people, or not playing with their toys
  • Go back to thumb sucking or wetting the bed at night

Preschool-age children may:

  • Have trouble getting used to change and loss
  • Not be able to self-regulate emotions and may depend on the adults around them to help them feel better
  • Return to behaviors typical of younger children
  • Startle easily

If any behavior lasts for more than two to four weeks, or if new behaviors suddenly appear later, these children may need more help coping. Talk with the child’s family about making a referral for mental health services.
